Host Theatre Criteria

Host Theatre Eligibility Criteria for the Lloyd Richards New Futures Residency:

The host theatre must:

  • Be a 501(c)(3) non-profit in the United States and must have an annual budget of at least $1M. We cannot accept applications from theatres that are fiscally sponsored.
  • Have an Artistic Director who is a practicing theatre director or choreographer and an SDC Member in good standing.
  • Be committed to exploring new models of leadership, artistry, and community engagement to support the field’s reemergence.
  • Be committed to supporting a Resident Artist with mutually agreed upon collaborations for the duration of the year-long residency. The Artistic Director must be prepared to serve as a mentor to the Resident Artist throughout the year as the Resident explores the nuances and complications of institutional leadership and infrastructure. Senior staff members should also understand the nature of this collaboration and be prepared to collaborate with the Resident.
  • Demonstrate a pre-existing commitment to BIPOC artists and its local BIPOC community.
  • Agree to hire the Resident Artist to direct or choreograph a production within the next two to three years.

While we are deeply sympathetic to staffing issues at regional theatres across the country, this residency is not intended as an opportunity to hire back a former staff member who was laid off or furloughed.

SDCF will provide a $40,000 stipend to the selected Resident Artist. Priority will be given to new and emerging relationships, and to host theatre applicants who can add significantly to the Resident’s compensation with health insurance, housing, travel, or some other benefit.

If you have questions about the application or your organization’s eligibility to serve as a host theatre, please contact SDCF Executive Director Rebecca Hewett at rhewett@sdcfoundation.org or (646) 524-2226.
