Professional Development Program 2022-2023: Season Cycle 1 Opportunities

Below you will find details for the opportunities available to apply to this cycle. They include:

SHADOW OPPORTUNITIES

Shadowing – Bad Cinderella with JoAnn M. Hunter

This opportunity lets you shadow Choreographer JoAnn M. Hunter during technical rehearsals for Bad Cinderella for three weeks on Broadway in New York City

Production Title: Bad Cinderella

Theatre Information (location of the shadowing): Imperial Theatre – 249 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036

Dates of Technical Rehearsal: January 30, 2023 – February 17, 2023

Stipend: $1,800

Additional information: This Shadow opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early or mid-career choreographer specifically interested in learning more about the intricacies of the role of the choreographer during the tech process of a large-scale new musical on Broadway

Shadowing – Hamilton with Hannah Ryan

This opportunity lets you shadow Resident Director Hannah Ryan on Hamilton: An American Musical Broadway in New York City for two weeks in January 2023

Production Title: Hamilton: An American Musical

Theatre Information (location of the shadowing): Richard Rodgers Theatre 226 W 46th St, New York, NY 

Dates: Two weeks in January 2023 (exact dates are flexible and decided between the Shadow and Hannah)

Stipend: $1,200 for the two-week opportunity

Additional information: This Shadow opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early or mid-career director specifically interested in learning more about the responsibilities and role of an Associate/Resident Director.

OBSERVERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

 

Observership – Sweeney Todd with Thomas Kail

This opportunity will have someone observing Thomas Kail on the Broadway production of the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in New York City starting January 2023.

Production Title: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Rehearsal location: Midtown New York City

Theatre Information: Lunt-Fontanne Theatre – 205 W 46th Street New York, NY

Dates:

First Rehearsal: January 11, 2023

Opening Night: March 26, 2023

Stipend: $5,400

Additional information: This Observer opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an emerging or early career director specifically interested in learning about how to put together a large-scale classical musical on Broadway. Additionally, please note that interviews for this opportunity will start at the top of January and you will be joining the process as soon as possible if selected but will be at least one week after the start of rehearsals.

Observer – The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window with Anne Kauffman

This opportunity will have someone observe Director Anne Kauffman on The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window at Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City starting January 2023

Production Title: The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window by Lorraine Hansberry

Rehearsal Location: Brooklyn, New York

Theatre Information BAM Harvey Theatre 651 Fulton St Brooklyn NY 11217

Dates:

First Rehearsal: January 10, 2023

Opening Night: February 23, 2023  

Stipend: $3,600  

Additional information: This Observer opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early-career director specifically interested in observing the process of a major New York revival of a Lorraine Hansberry’s play. Please note that you will be joining the production for rehearsals in January – there will have been one previous week of rehearsal in early December so you will be joining as an Observer for their second week of rehearsal.

Observership – New York, New York with Susan Stroman

This opportunity allows someone to observe Director and Choreographers Susan Stroman on the new musical New York, New York in New York City starting January 2023.

Production Title: New York, New York

Rehearsal location: Midtown New York City

Dates:

First Rehearsal: January 16, 2023

Opening Night: April 26, 2023

Stipend: $7,800

Additional information: This Observer opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an emerging or early career director and/or choreographer specifically interested in learning about how to put together a large-scale new musical on Broadway.

FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Fellowship: Young Americans with Desdemona Chiang

This opportunity allowed someone to be a Fellow to Director Desdemona Chiang for the world premiere production of Young Americans by Lauren Yee. This is a co-production between Portland Center Stage and Pittsburgh Public Theater. The Fellow for this production would be with the show at both locations.

Additional information: This Fellowship opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early career director specifically interested in learning more about directing new plays and the process of co-production of play.

Fellowship: Private Lives with KJ Sanchez

This opportunity lets you be a Fellow to Director KJ Sanchez on Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Private Lives in Tucson, Arizona starting March 2023.

Production Title: Private Lives by Noël Coward

Theatre Information: The Temple of Music and Art – 330 S. Scott Ave. Tucson, AZ 85701

Dates:

First Rehearsal: March 21, 2023

Opening Night: April 21, 2023

Award: $3,300

Additional information: This Fellowship opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early career director specifically interested in learning more about directing a new vision of a classical production. This production of Privates Lives will be set in Argentina with an all-Latine cast and include tango dancing as well. Housing is included in this opportunity.

Please note that since Arizona Theatre Company operates in Tucson and Phoenix, there will be five additional days when the production transfer to Phoenix, AZ after the Fellowship (May 10th – May 13th). There is potential for extension for the Fellow to participate in those additional days to be discussed with finalists at a later date. The focus of this Fellowship will be the dates listed above and for the production process in Tucson.
