Professional Development Program 2023-2024: Season Cycle 1 Opportunities

Below you will find details for the opportunities available to apply to this cycle. They include:

  • Shadowing Associate Choreographer Camden Gonzales during rehearsals for Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway
  • Shadowing Director Daniel Aukin on Stereophonic by David Adjmi at Playwrights Horizons in New York City
  • Observing Director Trip Cullman on I Can Get It For You Wholesale at Classic Stage Company in New York City
  • Observing Director Lili-Anne Brown on The Nacirema Society by Pearl Cleage at the Goodman Theater in Chicago, IL

 

Information of note:

Each production will have its own health and safety protocols and that anyone selected for an opportunity on a production will be required to agree to and follow the established health and safety protocols before joining a production.

Housing is only included in opportunities where explicitly stated.

Any applicant currently enrolled in a collegiate level institution must have completed their program by the start date of any opportunity they are applying for.

This is the first cycle of the season. There will be at least two more cycles this season with opportunities in New York and across the country. If you do not see an opportunity that feels like a good fit for you there will be more throughout the year.

Shadowing – Moulin Rouge! The Musical with Associate Choreographer Camden Gonzales

This opportunity lets you shadow Associate Choreographer Camden Gonzales on Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway in New York City for three weeks starting in August 2023

Production Title: Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Theatre Information (location of the shadowing): Manhattan NYC

Dates: August 22nd 2023 – September 10th, 2023

Stipend: $1,800 for the three-week opportunity

Additional information: The ideal candidate for this Shadow opportunity is an early or mid-career dancer or choreographer specifically interested in future work as an Associate Choreographer. Someone who is interested in learning about the responsibilities and role of an Associate Choreographer on a large-scale musical, and the role that they play in the upkeep, teaching, and casting of a musical.

Shadowing – Stereophonic by David Adjmi with Director Daniel Aukin at Playwrights Horizons

This opportunity lets you shadow Director Daniel Aukin during the final run through in the room and tech process of Stereophonic at Playwrights Horizons in NYC starting in September 2023

Production Title: Stereophonic by David Adjmi

Theatre Information (location of shadowing): Playwrights Horizons New York City

Dates of Shadowing: September 20th 2023 – October 7th 2023

Stipend: $1,200

Additional information: This Shadow opportunity is ideal for an early career director specifically interested in learning more about getting a world premiere musical production from the rehearsal room to the first experience with an audience. This opportunity will have you observing one late stage run through in the rehearsal room, tech process, and first preview of this production. Finalized dates of these different parts of the process will be confirm closer to the date but will fall in the window shared above. This opportunity is open to two shadows.

Observership – I Can Get It For You Wholesale with Director Trip Cullman at Classic Stage Company in New York City

This opportunity allows someone to be an Observer to Director Trip Cullman for his production of I Can Get It For You Wholesale at Classic Stage Company in New York City starting September 2023

Production Title: I Can Get It For You Wholesale

Dates of Fellowship: September 5th, 2023 (first rehearsal) – October 30th, 2023 (opening night)

Rehearsal and Performance Location: New York City, NY

Award: $4,800

Additional information: This Observership opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early career director specifically interested in musical comedy and/or musical revivals.

Observership – The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years (The Nacirema Society) by Pearl Cleage with Director Lili-Anne Brown at Goodman Theatre in Chicago, IL

This opportunity allows someone to be an Observer to Director Lili-Anne Brown for her production of The Nacirema Society by Pearl Cleage at Goodman Theatre in Chicago starting August 2023

Production Title: The Nacirema Society by Pearl Cleage 

Dates of Fellowship: August 15th, 2023 (first rehearsal) – September 26th, 2023 (opening night)

Rehearsal and Performance Location: Goodman Theatre Chicago, IL

Award: $3,600

Additional information: This Observership opportunity is an ideal opportunity for an early career director specifically interested in learning more about directing comedy/farce/historical drama. All are welcome to apply but local directors will be prioritized for this opportunity.
